Can Google's Triple Headed Dragon Continue to Reign & Why Should Ecommerce Merchants Care?

At present Google is¬†Triumvirate Supreme as far as Search, SEO & Adwords goes, but with a bellicose band of competitive tech firms contracting its collective muscle, many wonder when Google’s triple headed dragon will fall.

It might be a different fight if only Google were tussling with the tag-team effort of search underdogs Bing and Yahoo!, but Facebook and Twitter are also in the ring.

With Microsoft and Yahoo! partnering to lock a double set of cross hairs on Google, it’s hard to imagine a missed shot, especially given that Microsoft’s mobile strategy means it is firing with an even heavier grain munition (according to a recent BBC article, its iPhone widget has already been downloaded by 4.3 million users in the U.S.).

It’s clear that Facebook is no mush-mouth in the search-ad world. More users are finding it easier to search the web from their cozy FB interface’s, which also means better Facebook ad options as well. That’s right, this competitor has teeth–very long, sharp teeth. Watch out Google.

Twitter, once the  meek pussycat of social media, has rolled out an @earlybird advertising plan that will give it long term sustainability. Now with new claws flashing, this feline is in the ring for blood.

What does all this mean for ecommerce merchants? Diversify, diversify, diversify! In today’s business world you can’t just bet on the biggest contender, you’ve got to take a more sophisticated, multi-layer approach. While being involved in all of the emerging platforms can offer a safety net, remember this industry is forever changing, so properly evaluating the effectiveness of your campaigns over time is also a key for successful internet marketing.
