A Case for Mobile Commerce for the Yahoo! Store Platform

Mobile commerce (mcommerce) is growing at a rapid rate: There are 280 million mobile phones in the USA. By 2011, 50% of mobile phone users will be using web-enable smart phones. Of current smart phone users, 37% have made a purchase from their phone.

FastPivot randomly selected 15 client stores for a mobile commerce case study. Mobile user analytics data indicated that there was an average increase in mobile traffic of 68% and an increase in revenue of 119% in just five months. Going mobile means modifying your current site to include a lightweight front end that delivers a smooth mobile experience. It’s important to adapt the store header, color palette, search and add-to-cart buttons. The home page should include featured items and mobile store navigation. There should also be an enlarged image feature on the product page.
All of these mobile store design feature modifications will integrate nicely into a Yahoo! Store platform. It’s important that such a mobile integration does the following:
  • Checks real time inventory with current Yahoo! Store
  • Searches based on product number, name and caption.
  • Ties directly into the Yahoo! Cart.
  • Includes Yahoo! Store coupon support.
  • Is valid against Yahoo! Shipping and tax rules.
  • Sends orders directly into the Yahoo! back-end (requires real-time link support)

Additional features a mobile store upgrade should include are:

  • Auto-detection of mobile browser.
  • Mobile-unique “about us”, “terms” and “policy” pages.
  • Image resizing for quick load times.
  • Data updated automatically and daily from your store.
Mobile commerce is expected to grow to $25 billion within five years. Right now mobile adoption is on a rapid growth curve: It’s growing at over 65% compounded annually.
