Name Server Change Will Affect Some Yahoo! Stores

Earlier this month, Yahoo! announced that it will be retiring two Yahoo! Store legacy name servers.

The servers are:

Old primary name server: st-ns1.yahoo.com
Old secondary name server: ns5.store.yahoo.com

Stores that are still using these name servers will need to update their DNS records.  The servers your store should be using (if you are using Yahoo! for DNS) are:

Primary name server: yns1.yahoo.com
Secondary name server: yns2.yahoo.com

How do I know if this affects my Yahoo! Store?

Only about 7000 of the older Yahoo! stores will be affected. Yahoo! would have notified you via email around June 17th 2010 if your store is still using the old servers.

If you’re concerned that you may have missed the email, you can also check now to see if your store is using the correct DNS servers:

  • Go to http://www.whois.net/
  • Type your domain name in the first box, next to ‘WHOIS Lookup’ and click the ‘go’ button
  • In the indented block of information, look for ‘Name Server’¬† – you’ll see it listed on two lines.
  • If the servers listed are “YNS1.YAHOO.COM” and “YNS2.YAHOO.COM”, your domain’s Name Servers are already correct.
  • If the servers listed are “st-ns1.yahoo.com” and “ns5.store.yahoo.com”, you’ll need to update your registration records. (More information on this below).
  • If your Name Servers are something else entirely, then you are not using Yahoo’s Name Servers, and the change will not affect you.¬† You should leave your name servers as-is.

My name servers are the old ones.  What should I do?

You will need to update the registration for your domain name to use the correct¬† name servers.¬† You do this via your REGISTRAR.¬† If you look at the indented block of information returned by the WHOIS search, you should see your registrar listed on the second line. Different registrars have slightly different interfaces which allow you to update your name servers.¬† Generally speaking, though, you’ll follow these basic steps:

  • Go to your registrar’s website.
  • Select your domain name.
  • Look for an option to update Name Servers.
  • Enter “YNS1.YAHOO.COM” and “YNS2.YAHOO.COM” as the new Name Servers, and save your changes.

If a domain name has been in use for a long time, the owners may have difficulty locating their username/password for the registrar.¬† If this happens, contact the registrar’s support desk and ask how to access your account again.

This change won’t effect most Yahoo! Stores, but if it affects yours and you have any questions or need for assistance, we’d love to help! Contact us
