On May 31, 2011, Twitter’s Blog displayed this very newsworthy announcement: “Introducing the Follow Button.” The button allows site visitors to “follow” a designated account without having to leave the page their on. This announcement was somewhat expected, but isn’t really earth shattering to the world of social media. However, it should create a new flood of business for website developers, who’ll need to start installing it asap, if they want to be ahead of the curve. Even with the new Twitter button situated safely, albeit snugly, in the nest, it’s unlikely that webmasters will be pushing Facebook’s ubiquitous “Like,” out.
In fact, they should be adding one more to the nest.
Google’s Plus One button (Google obviously isn’t out of the social race, even after its Buzz fail) is another 2011 newborn to keep an eye on. When visitors give it a finger tap, they automatically let everyone know that whatever webpage they’re on is pretty cool. While the nest isn’t close to being full, the branch (webpage) is only so big, so it’s no surprise to read in this article on Google’s new “Plus One” button that there are some challenges to getting all the social buttons to sing in harmony. The main question is whether site visitors’ social click through behaviors will be diluted or enhanced, given all the new social share decisions they’ll need to make.
If webmasters are with it, they’ll make sure site visitors are greeted by all the highest flying social birds on the block: Google Plus One, Twitter Follow, and Facebook Like. And just as caring webmasters would do for new additions to his or her human family, they should announce the delivery to customers and clients via newsletter, and social media updates.
