A November 22, 2010 IDC Press Release reveals “that mobile shopping “warriors” (hyper-connected individuals) and mobile shopping “warrior wannabies” (moderately connected individuals) will account for 28% or $127 billion of the $447 billion the National Retail Federation (NRF) predicts U.S. consumers will spend this holiday season…For retailers, the impact of mobile shopping warriors will be significant this holiday season as the survey reveals, across the board, retailers‚Äô m-commerce competence greatly influences consumer perceptions about the brand.”
Other findings include:
- Smartphone users are using their mobile devices to purchase product, compare prices, read product reviews, check product availability, and review price/product info.
- Social network “friends” are affecting real world shopping lists.
While it appears that the IDC research discussed in the aforementioned press release may be directed more toward smartphone owners using their mobile devices to shop bricks-and-mortar retail, we found that these insights apply to ecommerce store merchants as well.
Updates throughout the year from FastPivot’s mobile store design department have also insinuated that a mobile-social market transformation is underway. We’ve worked with many ecommerce merchants this year alone in order to upgrade their standard ecommerce sites to include a mobile design interface. But the way mobile shoppers browse is only one way in which mobile commerce is changing the retail shopping landscape. Ecommerce merchants should also be hyper-aware of increasing comparison shopping trends, able to provide easy access to product information/reviews, and give shoppers the ability to conveniently share their shopping decisions with social networks.
