  1. Two plus years ago we had [a developer who used to be in the Yahoo design network] build us a site. [site: edited out]
We found out later that we over paid for what we got. The site they built gave us limit ability to change anything. They knew this but did not tell us. It took them 4-1/4 months with, I would say was fair communication at best. After we went live the only time we could get a hold of them was if they wanted to sell us more upgrades and then it would take days for them to respond to a tech question. We where told up front that we had everything we needed to rank and to be found. So far the profits from this store have not paid for the site or its up keep. Our marketing person has worked very hard to learn Yahoo Store, she is very frustrated with the site We are not happy. My question is “Does anybody really make any money with on line selling”? All we see is a money pit.
Let me know how you could help. Can this site be saved?

    Thanks
    Keith

    PS. Basic Questions
    1) How do you do free shipping? And still stay make money?
    2) Why do people do multiple stores?
    3) Do we need to do that being we carry a wide offering of products?

    • Sorry to hear online selling hasn’t met your expectations. There are a lot of key elements that need to be in place to be successful…honestly not everyone who is online is successful.

Some key questions to ask re: your ecommerce store:

What are you doing to drive traffic? How do you compare in your competitive space?
Does everything you need require a professional installer (if so,might include installation difficulty gauge with products)?

Also might make it clear that there is service on top of a sell. Perhaps, encourage shoppers to send plan, request a quote so they can have it spec’d out. May also need to re-position the way you present your business. People aren’t necessary going to buy these kinds of products, site unseen. Perhaps redefine conversion as a phone call or request for plans. Your last newsletter was May 2008, so picking up on that and social media can get the traffic flow coming too. May want to look at this kind of site to complement what you’re doing locally and also use it to generate product plan leads. Many people just won’t buy this type of product to install themselves.
